The Big Takeover is extremely pleased to host the premiere of the demo version of Fastball’s massive hit “The Way”. When we finished we knew we had a great record but didn’t expect the success it would bring us.”įastball’s hometown of Austin album release show will take place on Friday, November 9th at Austin’s ACL Live!. With Julian Raymond in the driver’s seat, we were encouraged to take full advantage of the sonic resources available to us at A&M. Time and a sizable budget gave us access to all these great session musicians and we were able to go nuts with our ideas. Hit records had come out of there for years and years, and you could really feel that when you walked inside. ![]() The way is finally clear.Īccording to Fastball’s Tony Scalzo, “ Coming to A&M Studios to record was a big deal for us. With expanded packaging and an essay from Scott Schinder including a new interview with the band, All the Pain Money Can Buy returns stronger than ever. ![]() To make this anniversary even more special, the album makes its vinyl debut as a double LP containing all of the bonus material. This 20th anniversary edition contains the original 13 songs, plus nine bonus tracks including rare B-sides, compilation tracks, and four previously unissued demos. Produced by the band with Julian Raymond (Cheap Trick, Sugarland, LP), All the Pain Money Can Buy also delivered the second single, “Fire Escape,” as well as the Top 20 single “Out of My Head” (whose chorus was recently reinterpreted in “Bad Things” by Machine Gun Kelly & Camilla Cabello) while also including a track with Poe (whose LP Hello was certified Gold in 1996). For the bass part, one dash equals one eighth note. ![]() think the guitar part sounds better with chords played one whole step lower with a CAPO on the 2nd fret, but these open chords will match the song and the bass part. The release also received two Grammy Award nominations, and the band won four Austin Chronicle awards for the album. There is no strumming pattern for this song yet. “The Way” exploded at radio, eventually going gold, and propelling All the Pain Money Can Buy to gold status in only three months and platinum another three months later. When the first single from Fastball’s second record was released a few months before the album dropped, it was apparent there would be no sophomore slump. Texan rock ‘n’ roll/power pop stalwarts Fastball are re-releasing their critically acclaimed and mega-successful album All The Pain Money Can Buy as a 20th Anniversary Edition with nine bonus tracks (four of them previously unissued), liner notes by Scott Schinder, and a band interview.Īvailable on CD and, for the first time ever, vinyl, this remastered version of Fastball’s platinum album, which features their massive hit “The Way”, will arrive on November 9th via Omnivore Recordings. Owing to this, the couple’s real-life tragic fate did not influence the song at all.Fastball – Photo Credit: Howard Rosenberg However, Scalzo had already finished writing “The Way” by then. What happened to Raymond and Lela?Įventually, Raymond and Lela were in fact discovered – dead in a ditch and at a location that would indicate that they were lost. Once again, considering that this is a “romanticized take on what happened” to the Howards, it can be deemed as espousing the idea of “leaving it all behind”. Or another way of looking at that statement is that the couple featured in the song cast off the cares of the world for what they perceived as the ideal life, which is freely roaming with each other. But on the other hand, the title itself is based on the singer questioning the overall wisdom of them making such a move “without ever knowing the way”.īut all things considered, it is clear that he perceives the couple, as presented in the song, as being a pair of heroes who cast away their cares, burdens and apprehensions in the name of being happy, “today”. So basically, this song can be interpreted in one of two ways. In fact even when their car breaks down they continue down to road, headed off into the sunset so to speak, on foot. In fact they are so caught up in the excursion that external factors, such as the weather, hunger or even age, are not said to negatively affect them. They’re just on the road chillin’, talking and enjoying each other’s company. That is they themselves don’t have a specific location in mind. And the couple has set forth for an unspecified destination. Thus “The Way” is based on a couple who, somewhat spontaneously, one morning opt to pack up and leave their family life, including their children, behind. In other words, their children aren’t even aware that they bounced, only discovering such upon waking up themselves. ![]()
